What is GNM (General Nursing & Midwifery)?

GNM or General Nursing Midwifery is a Three and a half-year diploma course in the field of Nursing. Students who wish to pursue GNM diploma can proceed after passing their class 12 exam with Science stream. The Three year and half-year course includes six-months of mandatory internship. GNM diploma course is one of the sort out course which can be considered as a stepping stone towards making a career in the Nursing field. Graduates of GNM diploma can start their career by working with government and private hospitals and clinics.

In India, the average GNM diploma course fee ranges from Rs 20,000 to Rs 1.5 Lakh per annum. Which may vary based on the universities/colleges’ standards. There are various institutes in India which offers GNM diploma and admissions are done via both entrance exams and on the basis of merit.

GNM Nursing Eligibility Criteria

  • Should have passed class 12 with English and must have secure a minimum of 40 percent in aggregate in the qualifying examination and English separately from any recognized board State Open School recognized Candidates are also eligible for State Open School recognized by the State Government and National Institute of Open School (NIOS) recognized by Central Government. However, candidates with Science stream will be preferred

GNM Nurse: Skills Required

After the successful completion of the GNM diploma, the graduates are registered as an RNRM (Registered Nurse Registered Midwife) and is designated as a Nurse. The Nursing profession involves dealing with patients and assists doctors in providing care. While dealing with the different types of patients the Nurse attending them should have enough patience in order to show empathy to the patients. Besides this the Nurse should have demonstrated skills of working with doctors, patients and other hospital administration, compassion with having excellent communication skills. A nurse should be competent enough to communicate both in medical jargon (with doctors) and in laymen’s term (with patients). Also, a nurse should possess strong organizational and management skills as a nurse is also responsible for maintaining patient records.

GNM Nursing diploma is the most basic course and is of the shortest duration, and in the meantime the students have to learn all the nuances involved with the profession. The diploma level programme aims to train the students as nurses and help them develop skills to function efficiently in a hospital environment and can provide first aid, blood pressure monitoring, etc. along with having skills to function effectively in a team, assisting in research activities.
